Why Maria Montessori Said Middle Schoolers Should Work on a Farm and What We Are Doing Instead

Montessori believed that early childhood is a physical and cognitive birth and adolescence is a social and psychological rebirth

She observed that teenagers:

  • Feel uncertain about themselves

  • Crave independence

  • Are highly sensitive to judgment

  • Long to belong to a community

  • Want their work to be meaningful

She wrote that adolescents need “valorization” meaning they need to feel valued through contribution. She explained classroom time and academics alone don’t meet these needs.

For this reason, Montessori proposed middle schoolers work on farms in lieu of conventional schooling.

She further explained that early adolescents should experience how society functions (not just read about it), should experience a micro society where cooperation, shared responsibility, interdependence, and democratic decision-making were modeled, and be in an environment that supports dignity and builds moral character.

She believed early adolescents should experience firsthand how society functions and not just read about it.

And while our learning environment does not emulate a farm, per se, our model reflects that same philosophy.

Instead of passively attending school, our students are creating it

They're encouraged to think outside-of-the-box, learn to work as a team, contribute to decision-making, solve real-world problems, and help shape the structures that guide their daily experience. In doing so, they are practicing leadership, civics, and responsibility.

Our students are working on building their learning community, and as a result, have the opportunity to begin to see themselves as capable and impactful. They learn that their ideas matter and that their efforts shape the world around them.

Montessori believed adolescents develop self-worth through contribution and by inviting students to co-create their school, we honor that insight.
